Saturday 13 and Sunday 14th June saw a whole different world at Illabo Motorsport Park this year, with a combination of mowers and karts on the track. The weather had us a bit concerned in the leadup, but held off nicely, and a great weekend had by all.
Drivers arrived from across the state on Friday 12th and Saturday 13th June, preparing their motors for a full schedule of demonstrations that showcased both speed and skill for the weekend of Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 June.
Adding a unique twist to the event, Saturday focused on a mix of karts and mowers - providing a great amount of entertainment. The mowers demonstrated impressive speed and control in both standard and modified categories, while Sunday allowed the karts to have full access. Despite their humble origins as lawn-care equipment, these machines showcased serious engineering and competitive spirit!
The reduced event schedule, combined with running only small motors allowed for a fast-paced change of events, providing drivers with an "all they can handle" run of the track!
We had a number of junior karters taking to the track for the first time, showing great initiative and taking to motorsport like a duck to water. Also in attendance were a number of regular intermediate and experienced karters showing their experience, honing their skills and having an all-round great time.
The atmosphere was filled with a friendly competition, with all drivers pushing themselves for further improvement and to get the best from their machines, with time between runs spent making minor modifications to modify power and torque to suit the track.
Families enjoyed a welcoming atmosphere throughout the venue, with the track canteen hosted by The Farm House Illabo, pit access during the lunch break, and opportunities to meet drivers making the event a great day out for motorsport fans of all ages.
Volunteers and officials worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the events ran smoothly and safely across the weekend.
Event organizers expressed their gratitude to competitors, volunteers, and spectators for supporting the speedway community and helping make the weekend a success. Their dedication continues to strengthen grassroots motorsport and provide opportunities for both new and experienced racers to compete.
If this weekend's action was any indication, fans can expect even more excitement when the karts and mowers return to the track.
