Illabo Motorsport Park impacted by loss of Work Crews from Junee Correctional Centre

ree

It's been two months since the NSW state government officially took over Junee Correctional Centre and Junee locals are feeling the changes.

Multiple local businesses and community organisations have been affected by the loss of support from the Jail — either through local purchases by the Centre from local small businesses, or loss of labour provided from inmate work groups.

Illabo Motorsport Park, managed by Gasworks Motorsport Inc, relied on the work from Junee Jail inmates. The inmates have provided over four and half thousand man hours to build the track. As we are in a rural location, Gasworks Motorsports are volunteer poor, and rely heavily on the support of our own volunteers and the jail inmates.

Gasworks Motorsport are currently having conversations with the Junee Correctional Centre’s management team to see if the work parties can be reinstated.

Since Covid and the change of management at the Junee Jail, the inmates haven't been back, and without their help none of that would have happened and as Kerry Phelan, the Illabo Motorsport Park Promoter, states “It’s vital, absolutely vital, that we get that support back to ensure our regional track remains operational for a variety of events throughout the year”

The change in the jail’s management has also affected other small, local businesses, with the loss of local purchases from the Centre, and from monetary wise the impact on the local community has been very substantial.
